Privacy policy

This page explains, without too much jargon, what we do with information when you visit the site. If you keep using it, you’re agreeing to what’s written here.

What We Collect

You can read everything here without signing up, so there’s no account and no password. We only end up with information in two ways.

The first is when you write to us. If you use the contact form, we get your name, your email address, and your message. We use them to answer you and nothing else.

The second happens automatically. When you open a page, your browser tells our server a few things: your IP address, what kind of device and browser you’re using, roughly where you are, which page you asked for, and where you came from. Every website sees this.

What We Use It For

Mostly to see what’s working. If one guide gets read a lot, we know people need it. If a page keeps failing for people on a certain phone, we know there’s a bug. We also use it to keep out spam and the odd bot. We don’t try to work out who you are, and we don’t build profiles of visitors.

Please Don’t Send Us Passwords

We write a lot about accounts and security, so now and then someone sends along a password or a code while describing a problem. Please don’t. We’ll never ask for passwords, PINs, verification codes, or banking details, and anyone who says they’re us and does ask is not us. If something sensitive arrives by accident, we’ll delete it.

Cookies

We use a few cookies, which are tiny files stored in your browser. They keep the site running smoothly and remember little things like your preferences. You can block or clear them in your browser settings. If you do, parts of the site might not work as well, but you’ll still be able to read the guides.

Who Else Gets to See It

Nobody outside the people who run the site. We don’t sell your information or give it to other businesses. If the law ever required us to share something, or if we needed to protect the site or other visitors from harm, we’d do that. Otherwise it stays with us.

Keeping It Secure

We keep the site’s software updated and we’re careful about who can see messages. That said, no website is perfectly secure, and we’d be lying if we said otherwise.

How Long We Hold On to It

Messages are kept only for as long as we need them to deal with your question, or as long as the law requires. Then we delete them.

Other Websites

Some of our guides link to official support pages and other sites. Those places have their own privacy rules, and we don’t control them. Have a quick look at their policies before you share anything.

Children

The site is written for adults. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 13, and if we discover we have, we’ll remove it.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask us what information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Contact us through the Contact Us page and we’ll sort it out.

If We Change This Page

We might update this now and then. The current version is always the one on this page, and carrying on using the site means you accept it.
